Phase 1: Building the School Infrastructure

Problem Statement

• Need of tuition free elementary school in the local region
• More then 60% of local children don’t attend schools because they can’t afford
• According to UN statistics the illiteracy rate in Somalia has reached 62%.

 
Project Description

Design and build an elementary school that provides all children an equal opportunity to learn without being discriminated based on their tribe or financial background. This school will provide a quality, well- rounded education for elementary and middle school students in the English language. The design is intended to arrange the campus to be an open, welcoming and non threatening place, which is open to the whole community to use.
This phase of the project focuses on the construction of the school infrastructure.

Project Goals and Objectives

The objectives of phase one is as following:
• Building an initial 7 classroom campus with ancillary accommodation.
• Building a school infrastructure that facilitates at least 200 children in capacity.
By addressing these 2 main objectives we will put 200 children in to school with free tuition as well as address the illiteracy rate in the local region in the long run.

Project Scope

Includes:

This Phase of the project includes the following:
• Procurement of building and logistics Materials (iron, cement, brick, doors, windows, desks..etc)
• Building foundation and outer walls
• Building school sanitation system(water, sewerage )
• Building 7  Classrooms
• Building 3  toilets (boys, girls and staff)
• Building 1 Office and storeroom
• Installing Desks and blackboards
• Installing school generator
• Installing electrical wiring system (for computer lab room and office)
• Hiring one security guard
• Procurement of  construction team

 

Excludes:

This Phase of the project does not include the following:
• School books and materials
• Teacher and their salaries
• Administration materials

 

Critical Success Factors

1. Fundraising of at least $36,000 Canadian dollars.
2. Finding cheap labor.
3. Procurement of Building Materials
4. Finding local project manager
5. Securing the land permit
6. Securing the construction team

Assumptions

• No Civil war during the course of the school infrastructure building.
• No natural disasters in the region.
• Building Material is available for procurement.
• 50% of the budget is available during the knick-off of the project.
• Remaining 50% of the budget is available before the start of building the school walls.
